Urvind Community, Romania

The Gypsy people have always been outsiders in Romania, but after nearly 20 years since the demise of the communist regime--which offered them some protection--they are further marginalised.

This has both caused and is exacerbated by higher than average levels of poverty and unemployment, poor levels of education, and overcrowded living conditions. They have lived in the country for hundreds of years, but are not integrated because of widespread discrimination and stigma.

Pre-school Programme

Unfortunately there is poor integration of Roma children into public education so many children go without. Teams4U is supporting People2People to set up a pre-school programme in Urvind that will prepare and enable the children to go into mainstream schools.

A homework class facility is being set up to enhance the learning and education of approximately 30 children aged 7 – 15 years. We want to give Urvind children a quality education. Education has the power to transform societies in a single generation.  It also offers protection from a multitude of hazards, such as a life consigned to poverty, bonded labour in agriculture or industry, domestic labour, commercial sexual exploitation.

Women’s groups

We work with groups of women in communities as they are often the ones that are marginalised in society. In Urvind we have been taking small teams to do crafts, activities and basic health education with the women.

Our community teams provide women with the opportunity and space to spend quality time with each other, having fun and learning new skills. Building people’s self-esteem and encouraging unity plays a vital part in people’s wellbeing. Through encouragement and skills development we focus on building their self-esteem and empowering them to take an active role in their communities.

How you can help

You can help by providing education sponsorship to help fund the children and teachers at this pre-school. Sponsorship is from just £20 per month, click here to find out more.

Where We Work

Our work is varied and diverse. In Eastern Europe, through one programme, we are sponsoring the care and education of abandoned children;

In another project we are helping to refurbish an orphanage where children who lived in sewers, are now being offered a home.
