Teams4U has partnered with the local health authority in the Dokolo district to help facilitate a programme to fight HIV/AIDS in the area.
Through our sports teams, we are enabling the health officers to engage with schools and the local community to carry out their programme that focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and treatment services.
Dokolo District HIV/AIDS situation
The effect of HIV/AIDS continues to pose a serious threat to development in Dokolo. There is an estimated 9,540 persons with HIV/AIDS who are in need of HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support services. Of these about 20% are in need of Anti Retrovirals (ARVs). There are 8,268 women are in need of Antenatal Care services, 455 pregnant women in need of Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission services, and around 10,000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children in need of support and protection.
Only 13% of the population has been tested for HIV therefore it is vital for the local health authorities to conduct further testing to understand the full scale of the problem and tackle it effectively. Also less than 20% of school going children have received adequate information on HIV/AIDS prevention. High unemployment and poverty, as well as lack of education and negative cultural practices have contributed to the spread of HIV in the area. Therefore providing opportunities to raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviours are crucial.
Strategy
Teams4U will work together with the local health authority to provide opportunities for them to carry out their programme by engaging with children and the community through sports.
The overall strategy of the health authority is to ensure a comprehensive approach in HIV/AIDS response in Dokolo district through:
- Improve access to quality HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services
- Improve the quality of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment service provision.
- Increase awareness and commitment to HIV/AIDS response in the community.
